The pink and green aren’t separate layers or surface color, they grew within the same crystal. As tourmaline forms, changes in its chemical environment can shift its color.
Tourmaline can actually occur in a wide range of colors, and sometimes several of them can develop within a single crystal.
This slice still carries part of its rough outer edge, with the inside polished to reveal what was growing underneath.
